Queenstown underdog has his day

Queenstowner's Blake Marshall put on a show to win the men's ski title at the four-star freeride event at The Remarkables yesterday.

Coming in as an underdog sitting 856th on the international rankings, Marshall made the most of home conditions against some top international competitors.

He was joined on the podium by fellow Kiwis Craig Murray (second) and Julian Hampton (third).

The fern shone proudly once more in the women's ski division, as Ohakune's Jessica Hotter took the gold.

Another Kiwi, Roland Morey-Brown, also picked up a podium finish in the men's snowboard.

At Cardrona, Jackson Wells qualified for the big air world cup final from the men's first heat, the only one run yesterday due to high winds.

Also at Cardrona, Russian snowboarders dominated the junior world championship parallel giant slalom competition.

In the men's event, Russia went one, two, three, as Dmitry Loginov, Dmitriy Karlagachev and Llia Vitugov claimed the medals.

In the women's event, Russia's reigning junior world champion Milena Bykova stormed through the final rounds to win the gold medal ahead of China's Naiying Gong.

Russian Maria Valova claimed bronze.
