Multisport: King rules roost in first event

Invercargill athletes Matt King and Shelley Findlater were the major winners at the inaugural Jacks Point triathlon held in calm, sunny conditions on Saturday.

About 50 competitors competed in a 500m swim in Lake Tewa, a 20km bike and a 5km off-road run.

About 12 people also competed in a duathlon, which included a 1.7km off-road run, a 20km bike and a 5km off-road run.

King was first in 1hr 5min 56sec, with Bobby Douglas, also of Invercargill, second in 1hr 6min 24sec.

Third was Queenstown's Jim Hawkridge in 1hr 10min 5sec.

Mark Cockroft won the veteran men's category in 1hr 11min 47sec.

King said Jacks Point was an ideal spot for a triathlon.

"It's a challenging course in a fantastic location with a beautiful lake for swimming in.

It is also great for spectators too.

I'll be back, for sure."

Findlater won the women's event in 1hr 24min 38sec, followed by Tania Govan (1hr 25min 56sec) and Annika Hesse (1hr 26min 42sec.)Sue Mavor, of Arrowtown, won the veteran women's category in 1hr 31min 14sec.

Mavor said the hills on the cycle were particularly tough, but it was such a beautiful course it was worth it.

As the youngest competitor, Jodie Llewellyn (12) was proud to win the junior girls category in 1hr 44min 31sec.

Troy McAlister won the junior boys category in 1hr 9min 40sec.

International Rebecca Grant started the summer triathlon season with an impressive victory in the Blokefree Triathlon at Mosgiel yesterday.

Grant took control of the 100-strong field from the start, opening out 280m lead on the 4km run for a handy advantage on the 15km bike stage that further enhanced her domination.

Grant was able to avoid a series of mishaps that transpired on the course among other riders, as she powered her way around the course and completed the 150m swim stage to record one of the quickest times on the course of 45min 14sec.

Grant's time was 3min faster than the winning time posted last year by Tamsyn Hayes, who finished third yesterday in 47min 42sec, with Samantha Scott second in 47min 23sec.

First in the duathlon section, involving a 4km run 15km bike and 2km run, was Monica Rietveld in 52min 52sec, with Deb Bowler second and Claire Challis third.

Roanne Hurley won the No Knees section involving a 15km bike and 150m swim in 41min 18sec.
