Mitchell Anderson (12), of Dunedin, leads a group of riders up Akatore Rd into the teeth of a westerly gale yesterday, soon after the start of the Coastal Classic mountain bike race at Taieri Mouth. Behind him (centre, white top) is Wayne Muir, also of Dunedin.

Invercargill's Michael White won the 50km men's open race in 2hr 15min 45sec from Malcolm McLeod of Alexandra in 2hr 16min 2sec. Kate Fluker won the longer 62km race last year and defended her title, winning the 50km race in 2hr 33min 59sec.

In the 20km run, Dougal Thorburn (1hr 17min 9sec) held off Michael Wakelin (1hr 19min 38sec) to claim first place and Sue Cuthbert won the women's race in 1hr 43min 15sec. Joe Connell won the 12km run in 58min 25sec and Alice Barach the women's run in 1hr 1min 40sec.

Graeme Egan and Julie Edmunds successfully defended their titles in the 12km walk.

About 380 competitors - down 170 competitors from last year - braved strong westerlies to contest the annual event which was was first staged eight years ago.
