Most sports going ahead as scheduled this weekend

Rain has made for a tough sporting week in Dunedin but prospects are brighter for the weekend.

The city’s grounds were reopened yesterday after three days of being closed due to heavy rainfall.

Indeed, the 131mm of rain across six days had many of those grounds resembling lakes more than sporting fields.

That disrupted a range of sports as touch, cricket, golf, softball and athletics were all among those forced into cancellations.

Today should offer some respite.

The scheduled track and field meeting has been given the go-ahead regardless of conditions.

That will allow those competing at the national secondary school championships at the Caledonian Ground next weekend a run before their big meeting.

It comes after Thursday’s secondary school twilight meeting was cancelled.

The annual Otago primary schools athletics championships were also cancelled due to poor conditions on Tuesday and the postponement day on Thursday.

Club cricket will go ahead, although its draw has undergone a reshuffle to accommodate teams.

Notably, in the senior grade Kaikorai will play University-Grange at Bayfield Park 1, Green Island hosts Carisbrook-Dunedin at Sunnyvale and North East Valley takes on Taieri at Memorial Park 2.

Some junior and school games have been transferred, while others have been cancelled.

There was uncertainty over the venue, dates and times of the national football league games to be held in the city.

However, all three will go ahead.

The Southern United men remain at Sunnyvale Park for their match against Tasman United at 1pm tomorrow.

The women have been transferred to Forrester Park, where they play WaiBOP at 11am tomorrow. The youth side plays Tasman today at 2pm at Tahuna Park.
