After a commanding lead-in, South Korea's curlers were too canny and classy.

The pair of Hyeji Jang and Yujin Seong won the gold medal at the Winter Games New Zealand mixed doubles tournament, beating Australia 7-4 in the championship game in Naseby on Saturday.

Having knocked over the United States in the semifinal earlier in the day, Jang and Seong pressed on in the final against Australia's Tahli Gill and Dean Hewitt.

It capped off a dominant showing from the Koreans, who went through the event unbeaten.

"This was Korea's first win in the Winter Games, so it is important to us and we are very excited by it," Jang said.

Both sides went tooth-for-tooth during the initial exchanges as things were tied up at 3-all by the fourth-end break.

However Korea edged ahead towards the end, and Australia came into the last end needing to steal two to force an extra end.

A strong runback by Korea's Seong spilled the Australian stones, and Korea stole the end to triumph.

Yang credited her team-mate's precision takeouts as a key to their strong tournament.

"His [Seong's] runback is very accurate, and important for our game," she said.

The Australians were hardly forlorn in their disappointment.

"We came in here just trying to reach the playoffs," Hewitt said.

"So if you'd told us at the start of the week we were going to get to get silver for Australia we'd have been pretty happy with that."

Sweden's Therese Westman and Robin Ahlberg won the bronze medal matchup, beating the United States's Tabitha Peterson and Joe Polo 9-8 in their extra-end decider.
