That is how the over-45 football final ended at the Forsyth Barr Stadium yesterday.
It was one of four finals played in the stadium.
Midfielder Robert Organ netted the winning goal in the final minutes, after a cross from Mike Cronin.
It was a proud moment for Wanganui company directors Bryan Stewart and Trevor Strong, who were founding members of the club 30 years ago.
The club was formed when Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the Brazilian genius known throughout the football world as Pele, was playing for the New York Cosmos. Pele was a member of the magical Brazilian squads that won football's World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970.
The team kept intact "because of the camaraderie between all the guys. Wanganui is a small place and we all know each other", Strong said.
The Wanganui Cosmos has travelled to Masters Games on the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney but this was the first time they had played in Dunedin.
They were impressed by the Forsyth Barr Stadium.
"I am privileged and proud to have played in the stadium," Strong said.
"I will be able to go back home and tell my friends I've played in the best stadium in the country.
"It's a wonderful facility for Dunedin. But it's hot and it would be hard to play 20 minutes inside here in the middle of summer."
Wanganui thrashed the Dunedin team 7-1 in the round-robin game.
"Everything went into the back of the net then," Strong said.
"But the final was different. It was the key game and we had to win it." Wanganui had 10 shots that just went wide of the goal or into the goalkeeper's hands.
The best Wanganui players were midfielders Shane Wye and Robert Organ.
They key to Wanganui's win was its skill, combination and speed.
"We are a mobile team and we have got the skills and pace up front and can keep moving all day," Strong said.
It was a gutsy display by the Dunedin team to hold Wanganui so close after the thrashing in their first game. The best players for the Melchester Rovers were Neil Wright, who slotted a penalty to even the scores at 1-all midway through the second spell, and striker Vincent Sutherland.
Wanganui Athletic Cosmos 2 (Robert Organ 2), Melchester Rovers 1 (Neil Wright). Halftime: 0-0.
