Jackie Padman was the inspirational captain who led a dominant Immortalz women's team to a gold medal at Ellis Park yesterday.

The Dunedin-based team won the women's final when it outplayed the Southland team of Dodgers Mustangs 15-0.

The game was meant to last seven innings but was called off when the score ballooned out after just three innings.

"It was awesome," an ecstatic Padman said after the game.

"We stuck together and it was a team effort. We knew what everyone else was doing."

The Immortalz team has been together for five years but this was the first time all the members had reached the age of 35 and were able to play in the Masters Games.

The Dunedin team lost its pre-match nerves after the first inning when it led 1-0.

It was then hammer time and it scored eight and six in the next two innings to win the gold medal.

The Immortalz batters made 13 hits in their three innings to two by Dodgers Mustangs.

Padman (35), who also played premier rugby for Zingari-Richmond, was the star and made three hits in her three turns at bat.

She was also nippy in the field and took a brilliant catch at short stop. The other batting star was Jill Farquhar, who also made three hits.

Pitcher Deanna Hoskins also played a key role and only conceded two hits in the three Dodgers innings.

It was a professional-like display by the Immortalz team with solid batting and sharp and accurate fielding. There were few errors.

They batted as a unit and ran hard between bases. They stifled the Dodgers batters when they were in the field.

This was the third time the two teams had played each other in the tournament. In round-robin play the Dunedin team won 7-6 in the tie-breaker first game and Dodgers won the second game 3-1.

The bronze medal went to the St Kilda Boboms.
