The last bisque has been taken at the Balclutha Croquet Club, as the club has been wound up after surviving for 90 years since its inception.

The club's three remaining members, Gladys Davidson, John Fitzsimmons and Ray Larsen, together with players from four Dunedin clubs and members of the Balclutha community celebrated the club's history and officially wrapped matters up on Thursday.

Club secretary Gladys Davidson said it was "very disappointing" to see the club close. The club had a rich history and "we have had some very good players over the years", she said.

Sport Clutha regional co-ordinator Kelvin "Tiny" Carruthers said it was sad.

"Traditional sports are struggling as people's lifestyles are changing. It doesn't necessarily mean the end for croquet - it could start up again in a few years."

Despite a good response to an open day last September at which many younger players seemed interested in the sport, work and other commitments prevented them from playing, Mrs Davidson said.

The club has given most of its equipment to Dunedin croquet clubs.

"We've always been associated with the Dunedin clubs, and participated in interclub games until two seasons ago."

Club membership never exceeded 27, and it had looked possible in the late 1980s the club would close.

Some Balclutha residents wanted the club to close so adjacent basketball courts could be enlarged. However, Gwen Bateman, Sophie Scott and Shirley Coatsworth, with the support of a borough councillor, kept the club open.

In the '90s 12-year-old Jasmine Dungey was the youngest player in the club's history, showing "great promise". She is now a veterinarian and no longer plays croquet.

The club won the B and C grade shields in the Otago Croquet Association competitions for the first time in the same decade.

The club's last committee meeting is on Thursday.
