If Otago fast bowler Neil Wagner ever gets to wondering where his next wicket might come from, he will only need to think back to April this year for some inspiration.

The South African-born left-armer caught the world's attention when he took five wickets in one over in the Plunket Shield game against Wellington in Queenstown.

Four others had taken five wickets with six deliveries in first-class cricket but Wagner was the first to take five wickets in one over.

The extraordinary feat took everybody by surprise, including the bowler. Wagner had woken up grumpy and feeling "a bit negative" about his prospects.

"I kept thinking to myself I want to finish the season on a high and finish in a good way," Wagner told the Otago Daily Times.

"I wasn't sure how I was going to do that.

"Conditions were tough for fast bowling and the wicket was quite flat and it was slow. But the ball started reversing and swinging quite a bit and things started happening. It was freakish.""Freakish" was a good word for it. Wellington was reasonably well placed at 136 for three before Wagner suddenly got the ball to hoop through the air.

Opener Stewart Rhodes started the rot when he edged the ball on to his pad and was caught in the gully. Justin Austin-Smellie was bowled first ball but a brutal inswinging delivery.

Black Caps offspinner Jeetan Patel was not able to clamp down on a devastating yorker and neither was Illi Tugaga.

Former international Mark Gillespie kept one delivery out in a triumph of sorts. But the resistance was short-lived with the burly right-hander's stumps skittled in dramatic fashion by Wagner's last delivery of the over.

"The guys had a lot of joy and were in shock and made it very special for me," Wagner said.

It was probably a "once in a lifetime achievement", but Wagner, who will become eligible to play for New Zealand in April next year, has promised to do his best to top the effort this summer.

While Wagner's effort is hard to beat, Pakistan all-rounder Yasir Arafat, who spent a summer playing for Otago, also took five wickets from six deliveries while playing for Rawalpindi, and Otago spinner Alexander Downes took four wickets from four deliveries in the 1893-94 season.

Perhaps there is something in the water here.
