World Cup downhill skiers Erik Read,  of Canada, and Sara Hector, of Sweden, claimed  the top spots in the Australia New Zealand Cup giant slalom at Coronet Peak yesterday.

Freezing conditions overnight meant the 86 men and 49 women were able to hit top speed on the hard and fast course.

Read had to come from behind to secure the win after trailing Austrian Daniel Meier  after the first round of races.

The Canadian was able to find his form in the second round, tearing down the course in 54.58sec for a combined 1min 49.77sec for the competition.

With the Winter Olympics in South Korea only five months away, Read is hoping this win will help him in his campaign for selection to the Canadian Olympic ski team.

"I think these races are some of the best you can get in the southern hemisphere in our summer."

The top New Zealand male was Willis Feasey,  who finished 10th in 1min 50.58sec after clocking runs of 56.13sec and 54.45sec.

Hector dominated both women’s races, recording the fastest times of  both rounds with 55.69sec and 54.92sec for an overall time of 1min 50.61sec. She was happy to come away with the win in her first visit to New Zealand.

"This is my first time racing in New Zealand and today I was very happy with my race. The conditions were good on the course and the weather was wonderful."

The Swede, No20 in the world, has enjoyed her time in the southern hemisphere, winning the ANC giant slalom at Thredbo in Australia, two weeks ago.

European Cup champion Kristin Lysdahl,  of Norway, was second in 1min 51.87sec and third place was shared by Katharina Liensberger, of Austria, and Mina Fuerst Holtmann, of Norway.

Piera Hudson  was the best of the New Zealanders, finishing in 16th in a combined time of 1min 55.18sec.

The Winter Games continue today with the final of the mixed doubles curling in Naseby and the Australia New Zealand Cup slalom at Coronet Peak.
