Dunedin schoolboy Bryn Schievink's remarkable debut in diving this year has led to his selection in the New Zealand Pacific Schools Games team to compete in Canberra next month.

Bryn (9), a pupil at Columba College, only started serious diving last February and displayed remarkable skills when winning a gold and silver medal at the recent Otago championships at Moana Pool.

He finished second behind Canterbury's Milan Vicar in the 1m dive and won the 3m with a score of 115.70 points.

Nelson Mears (10), a pupil at Rotary Park who has been diving for two years, will join Bryn in the New Zealand team after finishing third in the 1m dive at the Otago championships.

Vicar scored 111.15 points and was followed by the Dunedin divers with Bryn scoring 108.40 points and Nelson 107.40 points.

Becky Marquet, the coach of the two Otago divers, has been named coach of the diving team and Trudy Schievink is one of the team managers.

At the Otago championships Tom Fagerli won the open men's platform with 231.85 points.

Other Otago gold medallists were Kath Thomson (novice 13 and under 3m) and Fran van der Zanden (aged 14 and 15 novice 3m).

The five sports being contested at Canberra are diving, swimming, athletics, hockey and basketball.
