Curling: Men's match over with end to spare

Chang Min Kim played the shot of the game to give Korea a decisive win in the men's fours final yesterday.

The Korean team of Young Seon Seo (21), Se Hyeon Seong (21), Min Chan Kim (24) and Chang Min Kim (26) played consistently throughout to win the final at the Maniototo International Curling Rink.

All members of the Korean team are tertiary students in the city of Daegu. The skip studies business, the lead Young Seon Seo civil engineering and the other two members physical education.

They have been together as a team for the last three years and this was evidenced by their consistency on the ice.

They beat the experienced Chinese team of Chen Luan, Xu Xiaoming, Zang Jiaiang and Liu Rui 9-5.

Korea was leading 6-5 after eight of the scheduled 10 ends but the game was still in the balance.

China had the shot but Korea had two shots on the outer edges of the house. If the skip took out the Chinese shot stone they could get three.

Chang Min Kim's rock was on target and he peeled out the Chinese shot, Korea was left with three shots and the game ended with an end to spare.

At the halftime break after five ends, Korea held a 4-3 lead. and China drew level by scoring a single on the sixth end.

Australia had the hammer on the extra end and beat New Zealand 6-5 for the bronze medal in the men's event.

The scores were even at 5-5 after the scheduled 10 ends but Australia had the advantage of the last stone and used it to win the game.
