Four Maniototo Area School pupils will be ‘‘playing to win'' as New Zealand's mixed curling team at the Youth Winter Olympics in Norway next year.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee last month confirmed Courtney Smith (15), Matt Neilson (16), Ben Smith (16) and Holly Thompson (17) will play in the round-robin tournament at the Lillehammer Games in February.

They make up four of the five New Zealanders selected to attend the Games, along with Auckland Oliver Curtis (15), who will compete in the ice hockey individual skills section.

The committee chose a squad of 10 of New Zealand's best young curlers which it then whittled down to the four Ranfurly pupils.

Courtney said she was ‘‘shocked'' when she was chosen.

"Some of the people in the squad were really good.''

Leading up to the competition, they would practise three times a week as a team at the Ranfurly rink, playing games, developing strategies and working on mental strength.

"It's about just thinking about it when you are stressed and backing yourself,'' Courtney said.

Matt said they were past the point of just being happy to be going.

"We are playing to win.''

They had a tough task, with the gold medal-holder Switzerland in their pool.

Holly had been curling for nine years, starting at the age of 8.

She said she loved the teamwork involved, which was the group's strength.

"We've all been through school together so we all know each other really well.''

Ben said this helped the team develop good communication skills.

Curling allowed them to travel all over the world, Holly said.

"I've been able to travel to China ... and Naseby.''

Holly, Matt and Ben will get a warm-up tournament, travelling to the World Junior-B Curling Championships in Finland next month.

The team said a large reason for its success was coach Peter Becker.

"I don't think we'd be going to the Winter Olympics if it weren't for him. He is an amazing coach,'' Holly said.

Matt said he liked curling because it was different from other sports.

"I like explaining to people what it is. Whenever I tell people I play, they are like ‘what's that?'.''

New Zealand Curling Association Chairman Sam Inder said the four were great ambassadors for the sport in New Zealand.

"There is a solid core of curling experience in this team and they have the ability to play to the highest level.''

Team members had success at the national under-21 championships this year with Ben grabbing his second gold medal, Holly winning her first and Courtney scoring silver.

Matt represented New Zealand in this year's Pacific Asia Curling Championships.
