Central Otago Whitewater has whitewashed its competition.

The kayaking club reigned supreme at the national slalom kayak championships and national secondary school slalom championships in Tekapo last week.

Finn Butcher won the men’s K1 national senior title, Nick Collier won the under-23 title and Tom Goldsmith rounded out the successes, winning the under-18 title.

"It was a great result," Central Otago Whitewater chairman Gordon Rayner said.

"Finn’s always fantastic.

"It’s great to have the depth of athletes following in Finn’s footsteps, basically, from a smaller club."

Butcher, who is gunning for a spot at the Olympic Games in Paris next year, also won the national kayak cross title, with Goldsmith runner-up.

Collier won the freestyle event.

Kayak cross, formerly known as extreme slalom, is a new event which will make its debut at the Olympics next year.

Rayner said it was exciting to see club members excelling in the discipline.

Goldsmith was also unstoppable in the secondary schools championship, winning the men’s K1 senior championship and the CSLX Colenso Cup.

Otis Battrick won the men’s K1 junior title, under-14 freestyle and went on to win the men’s C2 junior event with Cooper Lerew.

Dunstan was named best co-ed school and best school overall.

Event organiser Kellie Bailey said it was awesome to see Olympians Luuka Jones and Callum Gilbert and top-ranked Butcher competing.

Slalom events have been "adversely effected" by weather in the past two years, with the national championships being the last event in the ranking races series.

"It was fantastic that we were able to complete the full programme for all these events," she said.

"The athletes and volunteers all love being at Tekapo and COW (Central Otago Whitewater) takes great pride in delivering a quality event."
