His second granddaughter was born the night before he competed.
His son, Simon, lives in Dunedin and his wife gave birth to Madison on Wednesday night.
His first granddaughter, Taylor, is 2.
Hood (60), a retired businessman from Darwin, lives at Geraldton, 1440km north of Perth.
"I have had several trips to Dunedin with my wife, Chicy, and enjoy surfing at the local beaches," Hood said.
"But this is the first time that it has coincided with the Masters Games."
Hood grew up in Perth and started surfing at the local beaches at the age of 10 in 1960, but he gave up the sport for 35 years when he lived in Darwin.
"There is no surf there," he said.
Two trips to Bali re-awakened the old passion for the waves.
He got the bug back and is now a regular in the surf.
He tries to surf every day and last year won the Australian over-55 title.
He has always used the long board and has never tried the short board that is the norm for younger surfers.
"It feels great in the waves," Hood said. "It gives me a feeling of freedom and I'm always relaxed."
