American Football: Pittsburgh fans magnanimous in defeat

They were all smiles two years ago but this time they were on the wrong end of a close scoreline.

Two years ago, Pittsburgh Steelers supporters Dave and Rosemary DeVere watched in the Terrace bar in Dunedin as their team managed to get up and take the Super Bowl with a 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

But yesterday, the Pittsburgh natives ended up on the wrong end of the scoreboard as the Steelers went down to the Green Bay Packers.

Mrs DeVere, who has lived in Dunedin for about three years, was confident before the game, and even when the Green Bay Packers pulled out to a 14-0 lead she still had faith in her side to come back and win.

But it was not to be and the DeVeres, who have been to Heinz Field - the home of the Steelers - many times, had to be content that their team at least made it as far as the Super Bowl.

"We seemed to be playing catch-up football the whole time and it was their day.

"But I like the Packers.

"If there was another team to win it I'm glad it was them," she said.

"I know they'll be a lot of broken hearts in Pittsburgh but I'm still proud of the team.

"We've won six Super Bowls."
