Almost do or die for Dunedin Thunder

All going well, James Moore will have a quiet couple of games this weekend. But the Dunedin Thunder goaltender is not banking on it.

The Thunder is hosting the West Auckland Admirals tonight and tomorrow and is desperate to break its four-game losing streak.

Those losses have come against the Stampede, which is beating everyone, and the Canterbury Red Devils, who are also looking sharp.

Consequently, the mood in the Thunder camp is still buoyant. There is still a sense of belief the team can turn the season around.

But equally the side is aware it is running out of runway.

"We are still confident in our abilities. We’ve just got to go out there this weekend and prove it, really," Moore said.

"But it is almost do or die at this point. If we lose another couple of games, it is going to be tough for the rest of the season."

The Admirals have posted two wins from six games and have been competitive in the games they lost.

They have a couple of gun forwards who promise to keep Moore and fellow goalie Toby Schuck engaged in the game.

"I’ll have to be on form. They have some good skaters and shooters and some very dangerous forwards on their team," Moore said.

"Taylor Rooney is up there. He is the kind of guy who can slip past a D-man quite easily. He is pretty quick as well."

Admirals captain Justin Daigle is a solid defender who is not shy about slapping the puck towards the net, so he is another to watch.

Moore, who has represented New Zealand at under-18 and under-20 levels, is happy enough with his own form.

"But the main thing at the moment is chasing a win.

"Our focus this week has been on going over our systems. We’ve been really working on the power play and getting that knuckled down. To be able to capitalise with the extra man is definitely something we are trying to achieve."
