From afar: Fakahokotau may just be the answer

If the Aussies get a lot of laughs out of mimicking Benji Marshall's home town of Whakatane on the Footy Show, how will they react to the surname of the latest Silver Fern, Temalisi Fakahokotau?

Fakahokotau is a name that isn't easy to forget, and the 20-year-old's dynamic defensive style in the ANZ Championship suggests her presence in the national team will also be unforgettable.

It looks like the Silver Fern selectors have decided to shake up New Zealand netball a little by adding young blood and, some might suggest, Aussie blood as well with the inclusion of age-grade Australian representative and Queensland Firebird Ameliaranne Wells in the squad.

After spending a lot of time on the bench at the Firebirds, Wells' elusive style - which some of her former team-mates compare to that of Maria Tutaia's - will finally get a chance to be on display.

Both uncapped players might experience for the first time what it's like to play as Silver Ferns in front of New Zealand's unofficial netball capital, Invercargill.

After watching the way Fakahokotau handled herself during a TV interview, it appears Waimarama Taumaunu's comment about her ''maturity belying her age'' is accurate.

Most new caps to a sports team look like a possum caught in the headlights in their maiden media speech, but Fakahokotau appeared relaxed, focused and authentic. She handled some curly questions with humour and humility without being a shrinking violet.

Fakahokotau is the fourth in a family of nine children (that includes seven brothers!) so that might explain why she is not fazed by the expectations of the media, her team, or the New Zealand public.

She is used to being in a team similar in size to that of a netball squad. Her creative tactical and physical approach to the game may provide just the jolt the struggling national team needs to get out of its funk.

The Australians, on the other hand, are on a winning streak, having won 13 games in a row. They have five straight test wins over the Silver Ferns, including a 19-goal thrashing of their closest rival at the Commonwealth Games.

Fakahokotau's mental and physical toughness will come in handy when facing the uber-confident Australians alongside Wells and her insider knowledge of how Australian netball is played.

If Wells, who qualifies to don a black dress because of her New Zealand father of Nga Puhi descent, and Fakahokotau were to get on court, they'd make a valuable contribution to the Silver Ferns at both ends.

Some new blood is just what the struggling Silver Ferns need and a dose of physicality, fresh perspectives and insider knowledge of what makes the Aussies tick, might be just what the Silver Ferns need to get back their winning streak.

If that doesn't work, surely the screaming and cheering fans in Southland will give our Silver Ferns, new and experienced, a much-needed boost.
