It is the one week of the year when secondary school pupils can legitimately be allowed out of class.

School tournament week, during which pupils travel far and wide to all corners of New Zealand to play sport, began around the country yesterday.

Otago gets its share with hockey tournaments being played in Dunedin, Cromwell and Oamaru.

Dunedin's Logan Park in Dunedin is hosting a football tournament while the South Island schools ice hockey tournament is being played at Dunedin Ice Stadium.

The South Island curling championships were contested at the stadium over the weekend.

Kavanagh College won the girls grade with Maniototo Area School second.

Maniototo won the boys grade with Otago Boys' High School second.

The national school curling championships will be played in Auckland at the end of the month.

Tomorrow, the Edgar Centre will play host to the first day of the zone four basketball championships which run through to the weekend.

More than 20 hockey tournaments are being played around the country.
