Fantastic Friday?
Water performance?
Whatever you call it — today could be a golden one at the Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo for the New Zealand Olympic team.
Following in the wake of Kerri Gowler and Grace Prendergast’s gold medal effort in the women’s pair yesterday, New Zealand will row for three more today.
Emma Twigg is up first in the women’s single sculls final at 12.33pm. She qualified first for the final and what a wonderful story it will be if the 34-year-old can get to the top step of the podium.
She finished fourth at both the Rio and London Games.
This is her fourth Olympics and likely her last shot at Olympic glory.
About half an hour later, the New Zealand women’s eight became favourites for gold.
The crews from Canada and the United States will have other ideas but the New Zealanders enter the race with the fastest qualifying time.
The men’s eight won their repechage in impressive fashion to secure a spot in the final and will race for gold at 1.25pm.
If you time your lunch break right, you might be able wash down your Marmite sandwiches with three gold medals.
But wait — there is more.
Lewis Clareburt is an outside chance for a medal in the 200m individual medley final at 2.16pm. Rebecca Petch has made the BMX semifinals and, all going well, will make it into the final at 2.50pm.
And tennis duo Michael Venus and Marcus Daniell will play for glory in the men’s double at 3pm.
