Time together key to midcourt's dominance

Shannon Francois has been right at the centre of the Southern Steel's success this year.

She has formed one-third of what has been a dominant midcourt, alongside Gina Crampton and Wendy Frew.

The 26-year-old, who has played 35 tests for the Silver Ferns, thought time together had been key to that dominance.

They were coming to the end of their third season as the first-choice trio and had been together for several years before that.

As the team looks to make it 12 wins from as many games tonight at the Edgar Centre against the Northern Mystics, the centre is hoping they can carry that dominance on.

''I suppose us three have probably had quite a lot of years of experience under our belt together.

''We definitely love each other's company and know each other inside and out, so it makes it so seamless.

''Half the time you don't even have to talk, you kind of know what the other one is thinking.

''It's kind of like, not effortless, but you definitely don't have to think about it or force it.

''It just comes naturally now that we've played together for so long, so it's nice.''

The Steel is coming off a 10-day break, over which it had trained and had a few days off to refresh before the season's final stretch.

It came off its last long break two weeks ago and delivered an 80-44 win over the then second-placed Central Pulse.

Francois is hoping the team can deliver a similarly dominant performance.

''I think after our last 10-day break against the Pulse, it was a pretty epic game.

''I think the girls are looking to do that again, just have that consistency of a full 60-minute performance because our last one against the [Northern] Stars was definitely a game of two halves.''

She felt the team had lapsed at halftime against the Stars after being up by 23 goals.

Ensuring it kept up its consistency throughout a full game was the team's goal

''Just being ruthless, even if we're up by 20.

''We still need to make sure we're doing what we want to out on court well and giving a performance that we're proud of, because it was a pretty shocking second half really.''

The Mystics are coming off an impressive win over the Pulse and Francois expects them to be tough to beat.

''I think they've been playing quite well lately.

''Maria [Tutaia] and Bailey [Mes] have been quite outstanding for them. Maria's been shooting from everywhere, so I think we'll need to shut them down.

''Obviously their defence is quite rangy.

''So we just need to make sure we can put the ball into good space to our shooters, because they've got the ability to turn
the ball over.''

She is looking forward to the team's second game in Dunedin and hopes a good crowd will turn out.

It is big game for the Mystics, who can move level with the Pulse and Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic on 16 points on the table.

With only three teams able to advance to the playoffs, the final month of the competition looms as crucial.
