When the Silver Ferns cross bibs with Australia, the results are always thrilling.

The two nations have dominated the netball world championships since their inception in 1963 and shape as the main protagonists when the 13th edition gets under way with the opening ceremony on Sunday.

Australia will still be smarting from the heartbreaking loss to New Zealand in the gold medal match at the Commonwealth Games in India last year, and the Silver Ferns have not forgotten the 42-38 loss to Australia in the final of the 2007 world championships at home in Auckland.

It is a great rivalry. Australia has won eight titles and shared the 1979 title with New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago. New Zealand has three titles plus the shared title from 1979.

While the transtasman foes shape as favourites again, England and Jamaica have emerged as legitimate threats.

England has an experienced core with some very talented defenders in Geva Mentor and Sonia Mkoloma, and Jamaica has towering goal shoot Romelda Aiken and livewire defender Althea Byfield.

New Zealand opens its campaign against world No 5 Fiji on Monday. Wales is up next on July 5 with Trinidad and Tobago on July 6. Semifinals are on July 9 with the final the following day.
