Described as "Steel grey", the uniform also features touches of blue and maroon and has been given the seal of approval by the players.
"I hope it proves to be a good luck dress and can take us through to the end," defender Megan Hutton said.
"It's a fresh new look. When we all lined up in it together during camp at the weekend, we were surprised at how great it looked. It fits with the branding of Steel really well."
Steel chief executive Julie Paterson said the revamp of the team's colours to match its brand was planned from the start.
"Unfortunately, delays in selecting the team name meant it was not possible to match the uniform with brand," she said.
"We had to confirm team colours in August 2007 and the Steel name was not decided until two months later. It was too late by then to change the fabric."
Aside from branding there was a more practical reason for changing colours.
The Steel's strip in 2008 was too similar to the Northern Mystics, which made it hard for the television audience to distinguish between the two teams.
"The colours were virtually the same and we found that a real issue even when we wore our away strip," Paterson said.
"We wanted to have very identifiable colours that relate specifically to our brand and Steel grey does that. It stands out and sets us apart from any other team."
The blue and maroon represented provincial links to both Otago and Southland.
The Steel players will put the uniform through its paces at a pre-season tournament in Queenstown from February 20-22, alongside defending champion NSW Swifts, Northern Mystics, Tactix and an Australian Institute of Sport team.
