Waikato-Bay of Plenty coach Noeline Taurua has been promoted, in the short term at least, to a role with the New Zealand netball team.

Taurua has been confirmed as Silver Ferns coach Ruth Aitken's assistant for the upcoming series against England and Australia.

They mark Aitken's last series at the helm, after which her previous assistant, Waimarama Taumaunu, is widely considered to be the frontrunner to succeed her.

Taumaunu's term as the assistant coach expired this month and she stood down from the role to concentrate on completing her application for the top job.

Netball New Zealand high performance director Tracey Fear said Taurua's appointment provided an opportunity for one of the country's leading franchise coaches to gain international coaching experience.

"We asked for expressions of interest from our franchise coaches and we got a really positive response and are pleased to be able to now offer this great opportunity to Noeline," Fear said.

Aitken said she was excited to have Taurua on board for the five tests.

"Noeline brings a wealth of experience as Magic's head coach and a former Silver Fern. I am really looking forward to the skills and enthusiasm she will bring to the Silver Ferns programme," she said.

The Silver Ferns play England in Auckland and Invercargill on October 3 and October 6, before the three-match series against Australia starts in Perth on October 23.
