Otago won just one game in a warm-up tournament over the weekend, with coach Georgie Salter saying there was plenty to work on.

Otago lost to Southland 47-52 on Saturday night at the Lion Foundation Arena, and then lost 56-68 to Canterbury yesterday morning.

It scored its only win, 65-61, against the Otago invitational side, yesterday afternoon.

Canterbury won the tournament, beating the invitational side 49-28 and Southland 63-43.

In the other game, Southland beat the invitational side 55-43.

Salter said in the first game the side played too fast for its skills and needed to slow the game down.

In the match against Canterbury, Otago won the second half but paid for a slow start.

The side improved as the game went on and the defence tightened up.

The match against the invitational side was a relaxed affair, with teams switching players.

Otago pulled ahead in the final quarter.

Salter said overall the side had to bring more intensity to its games, and sustain that intensity.

It had started well and finished well in the quarters but had lost its way a little in the middle of periods, which was something to work on.

The side was young but was keen to learn and combinations were emerging.

Salter was impressed with the form of former New Zealand player Jess Tuki, who switched between centre and goal attack.

She shot 78% in the first two games, and 92% against the invitational side.

Salter will organise a game among the squad this week and was hoping to play another game against Southland next Sunday.

She will not name a replacement for defender Katrina Grant, who is now unavailable for the upcoming national championships after being named in the Silver Ferns squad last Friday.

Salter had named an enlarged squad of 13 to cover for Grant's unavailibility and losing some New Zealand under-21 players for a match against Australia next month.

Otago starts its national championship campaign against Waikato on September 6 in Dunedin.
