The Silvers Ferns have never been shy to cherry-pick the best international talent.
They poached, errr, lured ace shooter and South African captain Irene van Dyk to the country following the 1999 world championships, and also nabbed Fijian captain Vilimaina Davu and Samoan captain Sheryl Scanlan.
They exploited some pretty loose international rules which only prevented players from playing for a different country in the same calendar year - a way to occupy the morale high ground and spoil world netball in the process.
Twelve years later the rules have changed but the Silver Ferns are up to their old tricks.
Big sister has been trying to bully netball world's governing body for the last 18 months in a bid to gain the services of former Samoan goal shoot Cathrine Latu ahead of this year's world championship in Singapore and has asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport to hear the case.
Latu remains ineligible to play for New Zealand until after the tournament but appears likely to be named when the squad is announced today as the Ferns await the outcome of the hearing.
There is no doubting her talent. Latu is simply one of the most accurate shooters around and certainly would not disgrace the bib.
If she is named then it might be at the expense of Steel shooters Daneka Wipiiti and Paula Griffin.
Most of the Silver Ferns squad will pick itself. Coach Ruth Aitken will stick with the bulk of the squad which won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in India last year.
Irene van Dyk and Maria Tutaia will spearhead the attack but who partners them is unclear.
Assuming Latu joins van Dyk and Tutaia, then Wipiiti, Griffin and Canterbury Tactix goal attack Anna Thompson could go head-to-head for the remaining shooting spot.
Wipiiti is the incumbent but her form has slipped away in the last month, while her team-mate Griffin has rediscovered her touch. Thompson's shot is not as accurate but she offers greater mobility and a sharper passing game. She is also the sort of player who could make more of an impact from the bench.
It all hinges on whether Latu is named. Best guess is Latu and Thompson will partner van Dyk and Tutaia, with Griffin included as a fall-back option should the International Federation of Netball Associations hold its ground.
Promising shooter Julianna Naoupu has shown promise but has not mounted a strong enough case to warrant inclusion.
The midcourt is clearer, with incumbents Laura Langman and Temepara George seemingly certainties, and Liana Leota and Joline Henry likely to retain their places.
Henry is recovering from injury and Leota has not found her best form. Canterbury Tactix wing attack Maree Bowden has being playing some solid netball and has come out of international retirement, and Central Pulse midcourter Camilla Lees is a player for the future.
Silver Ferns utility Grace Rasmussen is set to drop out of the squad - a victim of the mix.
The defence looks to be a strong suit for the Ferns with the country's four best defenders clear-cut. Leana de Bruin is probably the form defender in the ANZ Championship and Anna Scarlett and Casey Williams are not far behind.
Katrina Grant is the next best and is likely to retain her spot as well.
Silver Ferns: Possible squad
