Dalton has been contacted by Steel management about stepping into the shoes of star shooter Daneka Wipiiti, who is battling an ankle injury.
The Steel takes on the Northern Mystics in Auckland in the opening round of the ANZ Championship.
Dalton (39) said she had such a loyalty to the Steel that she could not say no when approached.
"I have an allegiance to Rob [coach Robyn Broughton] and Southland through both the Sting and the Steel and I just couldn't say no," Dalton said.
"Some people think I'm crazy but I have my own reasons for doing this. I'm there to do a job and support Rob and the team and would be very excited to sit on the bench. If it came to the crunch, while I don't feel the need to go on, I'd take the opportunity and do what I needed to do to help them across the line."
Dalton played premier league netball in Auckland last season with former internationals Anna Stanley, Kate Dowling and Leonie Leaver.
Dalton played for the Sting from 2002 to 2006 and answered a call to play for the Steel in 2008.
Steel chief executive Julie Paterson said in all likelihood Wipiiti would probably not play the game against the Mystics.
Coach Broughton would make her decision on the starting line-up over the weekend.
"The reality is that we have a back-up goal attack and a back-up goal shoot who have never played in this league before. We wanted to exchange experience with experience," Paterson said.
"You can't expect Te Paea [rookie shooter Te Paea Selby-Rickett] to step up in her first game and be expected to be the starting shooter. That just would not be fair on her. It is just not that realistic."
Paterson hoped Wipiiti would be back for the next game, against the Magic in Rotorua on February 20.
