A Heffernan double-act carried St Hilda’s Collegiate to a convincing 40-18 win against Columba College in the final of the Otago Secondary School tournament at the Edgar Centre yesterday.

Twin sisters Kate and Georgia Heffernan teamed up in quite spectacular fashion. Kate played the role of provider and the centre made a series of wonderful passes, many of them to her sister Georgia.

Once Georgia had the ball in her hands, the shooter hardly missed. And when she did, she ducked around her marker to grab the rebound. She drilled 26 of her 29 attempts and quite of few of them were from deep in the circle.

The connection between the siblings was really a little spooky. Kate would heave the ball up court, seemingly into a yawning gap, only for her sister to pop up out of nowhere and pluck the ball from the space like a phantom in a goal shoot bib.

Columba’s defence was not able to put St Hilda’s under any real pressure but the team was competitive in the opening quarter.

Shooter Katherine Morris was a towering target and Columba only trailed by one at the first break.

"They came out strongly and were looking sharp," St Hilda’s coach Lana Morrison said.

"But you could see that their goals were taking longer to get. We just kept applying the pressure and the mistakes came."

That tight opening quarter proved to be an aberration, as St Hilda’s outscored its opponent 13-5 to take a 20-11 halftime lead.

The third quarter proved just as decisive and St Hilda’s stretched the lead to an unassailable 31-17.

A beaten Columba could manage only one goal in the final period.
