Steel coach Reinga Bloxham is hoping a taxing start to the season will be the making of her side.

The defending ANZ Premiership champions open their campaign in Hamilton tomorrow afternoon with a fixture against the Northern Stars.

Then it is down to Christchurch to play the Tactix on Tuesday before flying to Auckland to complete a busy week with a match against the Northern Mystics on Saturday.

Bloxham laughed off suggestions the Steel had done something wrong to get lumbered with a travel schedule like that.

"We've got three games in six days, so it is going to be pretty demanding,'' she said.

"But we've known about it for a while, so we've definitely planned for it. In saying that, I hope we've done everything that we need to.

"Physically, I think we are ready. The hardest thing will be just being able to dump emotions from one game before moving on to the next one.''

The other issue for Bloxham will be how she manages the workload. Extended squad members Taneisha Fifita and Georgia Heffernan will travel with the side to provide injury cover.

"It will be just a matter of taking it game by game and seeing how we pull up after each one.''

But the road trip will also be good for team bonding and establishing those off-court connections which you cannot easily put a value on. They often translate into better netball and the Steel will need to play better netball if it wants to win a third consecutive title.

Bloxham believes the tournament will be as tightly contested as last year and there would not be much separating the six sides.

"I think the Pulse are looking quite good for this time of the season and they showed during the preseason they have got their connections and combinations sorted.

"But I think once everybody gets into it and gets a little bit of time on court, I think all the teams have that potential, if they fire, to take this competition out.''
