‘Awesome’ taste of top level

The past month has been full on for Te Paea Selby-Rickit.

The Southern Steel goal attack is back in Dunedin for two weeks after her first taste of international netball.

"It’s been really good, just been so busy," Selby-Rickit (24) said.

"I’ve hardly been at home since mid-August, when the trials happened, but it’s been an amazing experience. It’s been awesome."

She was involved in the Silver Ferns’ Quad Series and Taini Jamison Trophy campaigns, and will be part of the upcoming Constellation Cup series against Australia.

"It’s definitely a huge step up," she said.

"That game in the Quad Series when we played Australia, just watching from the sideline, I couldn’t believe how physical it was.

"It was almost like watching a rugby match at times.

"Obviously, I didn’t play in that game, but just watching and knowing that that’s the level I’m going to have to get to to play the best team in the world, it’s scary, but it’s definitely exciting."

Selby-Rickit made her debut against England in the Quad Series, before getting her first start against Jamaica last week.

"I played a bit against Jamaica and, obviously, without their two big shooters they weren’t quite as good as they could have been.

"But the physicality was definitely still there and they’ve got some great skills. But it’s different to that style we’re used to playing against Australia. They have a style of their own and timing and all sorts of things like that are different, but it was still definitely very hard, just a different style of play."

She had learnt a lot from the likes of Laura Langman and Katrina Grant, but also found having other young players in the mix helped push her along.

She hoped to bring some of her experience back to the Steel and said maintaining consistency was a big goal of hers.

A series against the world champion Australians is to be played before that though.

"Even more physical I think," she said when asked what she expected from the Australians.

"They’ve got a great squad and they’ve got some great players in their team. We came close to them in that final game in the Quad Series and I think there was just a couple of minutes in the end where we dropped off.

"I think they’ll be wary of that, because before that drop off we were definitely right up there in the game, so I don’t think they’ll be taking us lightly."

She said it was amazing to play for the Silver Ferns but was aware of what was ahead of her to go further.

"The hard work’s just starting. The Commonwealth Games are coming up in a couple of years and after that there is the World Cup.

"It will be tough to get a position, but I’ll definitely have to push and work hard to get there."

Going to one of those tournaments was her "ultimate goal", although she said there would be stiff competition for places in the squad.

"There’s some good shooters in the team and that’s something we haven’t really had in New Zealand for a while.

"We haven’t had much depth in our shooting circle and I think we’re sort of getting there now."

● Selby-Rickit and fellow Steel player Gina Crampton have been chosen for the New Zealand side to play at the Fast5 Netball World Series in Melbourne on October 29-30. Maria Tutaia will lead the team, which also includes 2016 Steel defender Storm Purvis.
