Thousands of motorsport fans gathered at the Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell last night to watch the first of two major events being held at the track this month.

The third round of the War of the Wings South Island sprint car series comprised about 16 drivers each manoeuvring lightweight, methanol-burning winged machines around the clay track.

After winning the second War of the Wings round in Dunedin, Cromwell sprint car driver Tony Buchanan was a favourite to win the third title.

He was up against Central Motor Speedway-contracted driver Jason Scott, of Queenstown, who won the first round in Christchurch. Those in the super saloons used last night as a practice run on the Cromwell track, which will host the New Zea-land Championship on January 9 and 10.

Sprint car drivers will head to Ruapuna Park in Christchurch for the fourth War of the Wings round next month, before they return to do final battle in Cromwell at Easter.

Points will be added up over five rounds, with competitors able to drop their worst result.

The programme last night also featured A-grade saloons and production cars.

Results were not available before the Otago Daily Times went to print.
