Claiming a seventh and an eighth place, John Whelan showed he is starting to find consistent top-10 finishes in the Toyota Racing Series, which had its latest round in Taupo at the weekend.
The Dunedin 21-year-old was up against 13 national and international drivers in the support class for the A1GP races.
Following race one, his Miles Toyota Group team made a "big set up change" that saw him move up the field three positions from his 10th placing.
In his last outing he avoided a spin "which spaced me out by myself and I just stayed there to the end," Whelan said.
Aucklander Mitch Cunningham dominated the weekend with two pole positions in qualifying and three wins.
The series moves to Manfeild for round five on February 28 and March 1.
