The allure of playing with machines in the sand does not diminish past the toddler years, and the final round of the motocross Sandpit Series 2012 promises to be a drawcard in Balclutha tomorrow.

The South Otago Motorcycle Club has been hard at work revamping the track at the town's reserve, on Glasgow St. President David Latta, of Balclutha, said the 10 classes of races will be run in the opposite direction and the jumps have been reshaped.

"We've made a few changes to give the guys a bit of variety."

The three-round series, which is a joint venture between the Southland, South Otago and Central Otago motorcycle clubs, has been hosted on sand-based tracks in Invercargill and Cromwell over the past month.

A smaller version of the Southern Series Motocross, its "sandpits" offered suitable conditions for riders to keep up their racing over winter, Latta said.

Describing his return to motocross as a "bit of a passion" after a long stint playing rugby, the former Otago captain is leading the Vets (35+) class.

His son Madison (12) is fourth in the 12-16 years 85cc category, in what Latta said is a family-orientated series.

"It's actually quite surprising, how many fathers and sons do ride."

Notable Otago efforts include Sam Cuthbertson leading the 12-16 years 85cc class and fellow Dunedin rider Grason Veitch, who heads the 8-11 years 85cc class.

Tom Scurr, of Wanaka, is second in the 12 to 16 years 125cc/14-16 Years 250cc class, and Josh Hurring, of Balclutha, is third.

The series has attracted upwards of 75 riders at the previous two rounds and Latta was hoping to boost that number to about 90 tomorrow.

"I think that if a few people have heard we've made a few changes, they will be keen to get along and try their skills," he said.
