Dunedin driver Emma Gilmour could not quite celebrate as wildly as her McLaren team-mates yesterday.

While Formula 1 stars Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were charging to top-four finishes at Silverstone, Gilmour’s papaya orange vehicle was striking some difficulty in Sardinia.

She and McLaren co-driver Tanner Foust had a difficult weekend at the latest round of the Extreme E all-electric rally series.

Technical difficulties, poor starts and penalties made for a frustrating set of races on the Mediterranean island.

Gilmour and Foust finished third in the first qualifying heat.

They dropped to fourth in the second heat after they were able to complete only three of the scheduled four laps due to a suspension failure.

That forced the McLaren pair into the redemption race, and they finished fourth after copping a 10sec penalty for causing a collision.

"A tough day again for us," Gilmour said.

"A really difficult day, and a tough weekend overall for us here in Sardinia.

"We got punished on our starts and it’s a very difficult course to fight back on."

Gilmour said a poor start in the redemption race followed by some damage to the car made it too difficult for the McLaren to fight back.

"A tough day with few positives ... although the team did amazing work, ensuring the car was repaired on multiple occasion, and was in a good window.

"We will have to wait another while, till the next event, to be able to bounce back. I am confident we will."

The McLaren team is seventh in the overall Extreme E standings, 65 points behind the pace-setting Acciona/Sainz XE.

Rosberg X Racing claimed back-to-back victories in Sardinia, becoming the first team to claim double success since the series moved to a double-header format.

The final two Extreme E races are in September, either at an Amazon location or in the United States.
