World champion Courtney Duncan has had to hit the brakes.

The 24-year-old was expecting to return to her base in the United Kingdom early next week in preparation for the resumption of the Women's Motocross World Championship.

The series went into hiatus due to Covid-19 but it is set to resume in Turkey next month, and the final two races are planned for Italy in early October.

Duncan has a slim five-point buffer at the top of the series standings.

But while the defending champion is very keen to return to racing, she is also in no hurry to leave the safe haven of New Zealand.

"I don’t have flights or anything. I was going to go early next week but I’m kind of holding off just to make sure Turkey is all still go, because I have heard that potentially that one could be hard work," she told the Otago Daily Times.

"Obviously you don’t want to be overseas right now unless you have to.

"As you can see, it is a bit of a mess over there."

Duncan has not heard anything official but "everyone is talking".

"We are just kind of waiting for the all-clear, I guess."

Duncan said it was unsettling not knowing whether the remainder of the season would go ahead.

"I’m just training like it is going to go ahead and doing everything I can to be in good form in early September."

Duncan was in good form late last month.

She turned out at the King of Central event in Cromwell and blitzed the women’s field and beat the men in the MX2 event as well.

It was the first time she had raced in New Zealand in three years, so it was a treat for her fans.
