League: Simple job for Warriors - play out the 80 minutes

The New Zealand Warriors will have a simple goal in Auckland on Sunday as they try to arrest a three-match losing streak in the National Rugby League.

They will face one of the toughest jobs in the competition to get back to winning ways with the table-topping Melbourne Storm the visitors to Mt Smart Stadium.

For second rower Feleti Mateo, the key will be staying switched on from start to finish.

"We have to keep playing for 80 minutes, which we haven't done for the last couple of weeks," he said.

"Play for 80 minutes and not have any lapses. If we win ugly, we'll take it."

After their defence had been one of their strengths, especially in keeping their line intact in the latter stages of matches, the Warriors have leaked second-half points over the past two rounds to fall to seventh on table.

They allowed the West Tigers four late tries in 12 minutes to see a healthy 22-4 lead transformed into a 26-22 defeat.

They then conceded five tries in the last 22 minutes to go from 10-8 up to 30-10 down against North Queensland last Saturday night.

The loss of defensive workhorse Micheal Luck with a dislocated left knee during the opening spell against the Tigers didn't help, and the lock is expected to be out for up to another six weeks.

"He's a big part of our defence, he cleans up a lot of the mess that might get left behind," Mateo said.

"But it's up to us to fill that void and I'm sure we can do it. We've worked hard on our defence during the week and hopefully we can rectify the way we've been playing."

The Warriors can draw some comfort from their last meeting with the Storm on Anzac Day, when they secured an 18-14 upset in a thriller.

It was also a match in which Mateo showed a greater selectiveness in using his prolific offloading ability compared with earlier weeks of his debut season in Auckland.

He still got a couple away, but more notable was the zero beside his error count and the 160 metres he gained, the most by a forward that night.

During the past three weeks, the former Parramatta Eel has been among the Warriors' best in their losing run.

After having also been used at five-eighth by coach Ivan Cleary, Mateo was comfortable in his present role.

"It's unfortunate we're not getting the wins," he said.

"But I'm happy with where I am in the team and to be playing some good footy."

As for picking his times to offload, he said it wasn't something he had focused on, but he was pleased with how things were working out.

"It was probably a risk for some of my passes to be thrown and I realise that," he said.

"I've probably pulled the reins back on it a bit more and focused on going forward. Generally when I go forward, good stuff comes from it, so I just have to keep doing that."
