Taieri Tigers defeated Kings United 6-0 as the second round of the premier women's competition got under way over the weekend.

Taieri went into the game having played a make-up game on Friday night, after an earlier game was deferred due to an under-21 tournament, and Kings sniffed an upset.

The early period of the game was a little bit scrappy as the cold weather took its toll and both sets of players' basic skills suffered.

As the game developed, Taieri started to assert more of its experience.

Most of the Kings team is new to premier level and, while the players competed well for most of each half, it was a 15-minute period in each period that Taieri scored its goals.

After Taieri was 3-0 up at halftime, the second half followed a similar pattern with a further three goals for the girls in yellow in the second period.

For Taieri, Libby Willocks was solid at the back, while Julia Boothroyd was very busy in the midfield.

Kim Allan scored two from rifling shots at the top of the circle at penalty corners while Emma Hopcroft, Greta Pearce, Emma Simcock-Smith and Charlotte Arthur also got on the board.

Despite not having any competition points at this stage in the season, Kings should not be discouraged as the team has already improved greatly from the start of the season.

In midfielder Sue White and goalie Rachel Buckley, it has two players who can more than hold their own against the stronger sides.

Momona beat Taieri 4-0 in the Friday night match, while in the other games on Saturday City beat Uni A 3-0 and Southern under-18 also downed Uni B 3-0.

The Momona versus Southland Barbarians game was deferred due to the weather and the risk of the Southland teams not being able to get home.
