Defeat was the size of a hockey boot.

That is all that separated Otago Girls' High School and King's College (Auckland) in the final of the Jenny McDonald Cup at the McMillan Centre in Dunedin yesterday.

Unfortunately, for the home team, it was the King's goalie Nicole Manchester who got her boot in the way of the crucial shot in a dramatic final.

Tied 1-1 after regulation time, neither side could break the deadlock and find a golden goal in the 15 minutes of extra time allotted.

So the game had to be decided by strokes.

Both sides scored three out of five attempts leaving the match at 4-4.

It came down to sudden-death strokes - striker versus keeper.

The King's keeper kept her cool and got a boot to Millie Cowan's shot.

Jubilation for the Aucklanders who won 5-4 on strokes.

The odd tear for Otago Girls'.

In the play-off for third, St Peter's College beat St Margaret's College 3-0.
