Women's team gets boost

The Otago women's golf team to compete in the South Island interprovincial on the Russley course in Christchurch has received a boost with the return of two experienced campaigners.

Jo Hicks-Beach (Arrowtown) was initially unavailable but returns to the team at No 2 behind St Clair's Abigael Crawford.

Although she has not played a lot of competitive golf this year, Hicks-Beach convincingly won the Otago champion of champions title by eight shots last month.

Former No 1 Susan Greig (St Clair) is also making a welcome return and will be placed at No 4 this weekend.

Greig won the Otago women's match play title at Balmacewen at Labour Weekend, taking the final by an impressive 6 and 5 margin.

Employment issues may still mean the pair may not be available for the Toro tournament in December, but there is little doubt they will strengthen the Otago octet this weekend.

The Otago women's team has made a good start to the year, ending a six year drought to win the Salisbury Cup from Southland at Balmacewen last month.

That team had Kate O'Connell (Ardleigh) and Becs Calder (Omakau) at the tail, with both winning their two matches.

Unfortunately, they were not available for this team nor the Toro tournament.
