Otago women lose to finish fifth in section

Auckland will meet Wellington  while Canterbury will play Bay of Plenty in the semifinals of the women’s national interprovincial on the Westown course in New Plymouth this morning.

Otago ended its tournament by losing its final section match 4-1 to Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay yesterday, placing the team fifth in section one.Otago will now play off for ninth and 10th against Manawatu-Wanganui in the 14-team fixture this morning.

No1 Abigael Crawford turned two behind Angela Jones,  who made birdies on the back nine putting her dormie four ahead.

Jones left nothing to chance, finishing the match with another birdie on the 15th to take the match  5 and 3.No2 Jo Hicks-Beach was the sole Otago victor, despite a mixed start in which she lost the first hole and won the second against Tessa McDonald.

Hicks-Beach drove out of bounds at the fourth but came into form on the next five holes to turn two ahead.

McDonald won the 13th but Hicks-Beach won the 14th and returned to 2-up, a lead she held until the match finished on the 17th green.

Annabel Evans lost the fourth, fifth and seventh holes to trail by three early in her match against Sara Deam. Evans failed to get up and down after missing the green at the par-3 14th and, the match ended when the pair halved the par-5 15th.

No4 Rachel Lissaman found  Janie Field too tough, turning three light and failing to make any inroads on the homeward journey, to lose the contest on the 14th green.

Susan Greig finished the week with a 50% record after losing to Jamie McIvor 2 and 1.

She went two behind early after losing the first and third, but won the fourth when McIvor drove out of bounds.

Greig three-putted on the fifth and lost the seventh to trail by three. The pair halved the next six holes.

McIvor duffed her chip on the par-3 14th  but the pair halved the next three holes, as Greig ran out of holes to stay alive.
