Otago too strong for Southland in interprovincial warm-up

The Otago men’s golf team emerged victorious over Southland by a convincing 15 to 10 margin in the interprovincial event which was played at Oreti Sands during the weekend.

Otago took an early 6-4 lead after the first round of singles and halved the foursomes  3-3  yesterday morning.

The senior Otago team repeated the 6-4 winning margin in the final singles round yesterday afternoon to clinch the win.

The event replaces the former triangular tournament as a build-up for the Toro interprovincial, as Aorangi has struggled in recent years to field a team.

Otago’s top trio of Fraser MacLachlan, Michael Smith and Brandon Hodgson all posted one singles win each while Michael Ormandy (No4) and Chris Snow (No5) had one win and one half each.

For Southland, Brett Dobbie (No10) had two wins while Jeremy Hall (No4) emerged with a win and a half.

It was a different story in the Masters (Over-40) clash which was dominated by Southland, winning 9.5-5.5.

Southland was in command from the first round with a healthy 4.5-1.5 lead, which it increased by winning two of the three foursomes contests.

The teams tied the final round 3-3.

Stephen Hitchcox was the star  for Otago with two singles wins, as well as  pairing with Andrew Hobbs to beat Glen Sutherland and Simon Boland in the foursomes.
