After a delay because the Westown course had become unplayable due to incessant rain, Otago posted its first win in the women's national interprovincial tournament in beating Southland 4-1.
Otago was scheduled to play Southland in the morning and Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay in the afternoon but will now play the second match this morning.
It is the third time Otago has beaten Southland this year after winning the Salisbury Cup match at Balmacewen and then downing its southern rival in the South Island team event at Russley last month.
The rain delay ensured a late start to the fifth-round match, the southern neighbours not teeing off until 2.30pm despite the scheduled start of 8am.
No1 Abigael Crawford was the only Otago player to lose. After a see-saw front nine, she turned 1- down to Angela Gerken at the turn.
Crawford won the 10th by sinking a long birdie putt for a birdie but lost the next hole when Gerken responded with a birdie on the 11th and Crawford lost the 12th after a wayward tee shot.
She battled on but lost the final hole for a deficit of two.
No2 Jo Hicks-Beach had a last-hole win over the experienced Robyn Pullar despite trailing by two at the turn.
Hicks-Beach made two birdies coming home to square the contest and won narrowly by halving the final two holes.
Annabel Evans (15) turned one ahead of Olivia Frost and went two ahead with a par on the 11th hole.
She missed greens on 12 and 13 to return to square but won both par-3 holes, 14 and 16, as well as the 17th to win 3 and 1.
No Rachel Lissaman posted her first win of the event at the expense of Southland's Helen Baird.
She made a solid start to turn 3-up and held on until the 17th when Baird three-putted giving Lissaman the win.
No5 Susan Greig posted her third win in beating Kate McGregor with three holes to spare.
Greig started strongly to turn 3-up and won the 10th hole to increase her lead to four.
The match then see-sawed with Greig losing 11 and 13, but winning 12 and the tough par-3 14th.
The pair halved the par-5 15th to give Greig the match.
