Otago finishes ninth in Napier

Otago has finished ninth at the national interprovincial championships in Napier.

Otago beat Northland 3-2 with Sumin Kang, Tracey Storer and Amy Johns all recording victories.

Kang beat Shardae Bulkeley 1-up in a battle of the No1s.

The match ebbed and flowed and an eagle by Bulkeley had the match all square with three holes left. The Northlander won the 16th but Kang bounced back to win the 17th and 18th to win 1-up.

Danielle Bailey had a tough battle with Kylie Jacoby and a lipped-out putt on 17 led her to 1-down and that is how the score remained.

No3 Storer beat Sjanna Bishop 3 and 2. She was all square after nine holes but good pars on four holes in the back nine led her to her first win of the tournament.

Susan Greig had a tight match against Jenny Peters. Greig struggled in the wind and was three down with five to play.

However, she birdied three of the next five holes to finish one down. She birdied the last hole but so did Peters.

No5 Johns had a slow start but came back into it and won 2 and 1, by a birdie on the 17th.

Otago finished eighth last year.

The tournament was won by Auckland for the fourth year in a row. It beat Manawatu-Whanganui 3-2 in the final.

It is the eighth time in the past 10 years Auckland has etched its name on the interprovincial trophy.

With the result, Auckland also completed a rare double after the men won at Hastings Golf Club just a week earlier.

Manawatu/Whanganui's Tara Raj beat Vivian Lu in the top match to go undefeated for the entire week, and deservedly was named player of the tournament.
