Otago club eyes treble after win

After winning the Otago Champion of Champions tournament at Alexandra on Sunday, the Otago Golf Club is on target to achieve the treble in 2018.

Balmacewen players won the Metropolitan Pennant series in July and the team will now target the provincial pennant final in North Otago in October to make it a clean sweep.

Led by senior champion Brandon Hodgson, Otago finished with 80 gross stableford points at Alexandra, one point ahead of Wanaka, Arrowtown and St Clair which tied for second.

Hodgson played regulation golf for 36 points. He was ably assisted by intermediate champion Dylan Stock with 25, while No3 Graeme Sykes scored 19 points.

Ryan Shuttleworth posted 37 points for Wanaka while Andrew Atkins and Jimmy Connolly chipped in to help the team total 79 points.

For St Clair, former Chisholm Links golfer Cody McMullan posted 35 points while Alan Gilol with 26 and Louis Smith with 18 came close to winning.

Arrowtown's Chris Yallop, Brad Smith and 12-year-old Noah Novacek also were on the heels of Otago.

A feature of the final was the performance of two of the
province's smaller clubs. Tapanui finished seventh with 71 points and Maniototo was eighth
with 66 points.
