More than 100 young golfers descended on St Clair Golf course yesterday to try their hand with a club and ball.

The Junior Tiger tourn-ament at St Clair yesterday was part of a national initiative to try to attract young people into golf.

Sport Otago Golf Force officer Mike Smith was thrilled with the turnout and said there was plenty of good golf played.

Along with a nine-hole tournament, there were other activities such as chipping into paddling pools or hitting a tennis ball with a club.

In the tournament, Daniel Metcalfe won the under-11 boys grade, while Ace Joung won the under-11 girls grade.

In the 12-14 age group, Cade Broderick won the boys grade and Dayna Williamson won the girls grade.

Cade won by shooting a 36 on the back nine at St Clair and winning on the first play-off hole.

The four winners go to Manawatu next month to play in the national tournament.

The prize for the winner there is a trip to Disneyland.
