The Port Chalmers Golf Club drove and putted above its weight when it won four of the Dunedin metropolitan pennant competitions this year.

Club members will celebrate the most successful season in the club's 95-year history with a glass or two of bubbly and food platters on closing day tomorrow.

Port Chalmers has a membership of 130 and is one of the smallest clubs in Dunedin, but its modest membership did not stop Port Chalmers winning pennants in four divisions.

The women's team won the metropolitan division and was runner-up in the Otago district final.

The men's intermediate team won the metropolitan competition and was runner-up in the provincial final.

It was the newcomers and the older members who put the cream on the cake by not only winning the pennants but also the provincial final.

The junior B and veteran teams added the extra bit of sparkle for the club with their unbeaten approach.

The captains of the teams were Clayton Sinclair (intermediate), Roger Johnston (junior B), Kasey Halford (women) and life member Laurie Forgie in the veterans.

It is also significant that some of the teams included new club members.

This was especially noticeable in the junior team, with Ben Churchill and Ben George having their first year of competitive golf with the club.

New club captain Steve Walker said the success was "a fantastic achievement for Port Chalmers, especially when you consider our size".

"I'd be surprised if we will repeat this success any time soon, although we will certainly give it a go."
