Colquhoun, a sprightly 74, managed to hit a 72 around St Clair last month, one of the few golfers who has hit off the stick fewer times than his age.
''A couple of years ago I had a 71 when I was 72 so I have done it before. It is always a target, although a private target really,'' he said.
Colquhoun has been playing golf for 60 years at St Clair, first taking to the course as a schoolboy, and then taking up the clubs as a teenager.
He played for Otago for about 10 years about 50 years ago, playing in various Freyberg tournaments. His wife, Cushla, also played for Otago. She also still plays golf as do his son and daughter.
As for his age-defying round, he said it was just a round of consistent golf.
''It was a cold, blustery day. I hit a birdie on the first hole and just kept going. Most importantly I won a jug of beer.''
He finished with two birdies and three bogeys, the rest pars, to break the age barrier.
He plays off a 5.9 handicap, but has been down as low as scratch in his younger days.
He plays most days at the course. Living across the road from the course also helps, he admitted.
''When it is fine I usually try to get over and play at least nine holes.''
The former grocer had been struggling with sore knees but had both knees replaced four years ago and they had given him a renewed bout of energy on the golf course.
''They stuffed me up for a while. It got so bad I could not get up the stairs to the 19th and that was pretty grim. But these new knees are just marvellous.''
