Golf clubhouse rises from the ashes

Hopes are high the Belleknowes Golf Club’s clubhouse rebuild will be complete in time for its centenary celebrations later this year.

Construction has started on a new facility after flames tore through the old clubhouse, leaving it gutted in June 2021.

Belleknowes Golf Club recovery manager Gordon Wilson said the insurance payout created initial uncertainty for the rebuild, but he was confident the clubhouse would be built in time for the Labour Weekend centenary.

"The builders started here on January 16 and we’ll have it completed by the end of June.

"It is certainly a phoenix from the ashes," he said.

While it was hoped insurance would cover the refurnishing of the building, demolition costs blew out, meaning this was no longer possible, he said.

However, Mr Wilson was optimistic fundraising would cover the refurnishing costs.

"We’ve got applications in to some community trusts, there’s some interest there and we hope that comes through."

Fundraising costs would also have to cover the costs of some trophies and awards lost in the fire, Mr Wilson said.

"A fair percent of the trophies were sitting in people’s home, but the honours boards, those things still have to be replaced," he said.

The new facility was larger than the old one, which meant four sporting organisations could make use of it, including golf, croquet, tennis and synchronised swimming.

Once complete it would be able to accommodate 80-100 people.

He said it felt great to see the club finally being rebuilt and he was looking forward to the finished product.
