Phil Bungard was too consistent for the rest of the field in the 54-hole Southland strokeplay tournament at the weekend.

The St Clair golfer was always in control with rounds of 70, 70 and 71 for a 211 total, winning by five shots from Liam Balneaves (Invercargill).

Bungard, Balneaves and Mathew Tautari (Green Acres) earned entry into the final qualifying tournament for the New Zealand Open at Cromwell in February.

The upcoming Otago and Canterbury strokeplay championships will provide the same opportunity for the top three finishers.

Parker Aluesi (St Clair) improved with each round in Southland to finish sixth after shooting 76,74 and 73.

Playing in the men’s field, Wakatipu teenager Yoonae Jeong put together a remarkable upward sequence of 83, 77 and 70 to finish seventh.

Diminutive Chisholm Links 14-year-old Kairangi Koni also held his own, improving with 84, 81 and 72 to finish 12th.

His sister, 13-year-old Anahera Koni (Island Park), led the women’s field after round one and finished second behind the experienced Robyn Pullar with 76 and 81.
