Jordan Woodall (Cambridge) was the star player on the opening day of the South Island age-group championships, shooting a six-under-par 66 in difficult conditions to lead the field and the under-19 section.
Karl Jorgeson (Remuera) is the best of the under-17 field, while Tiaki Ogilvie (Russley) leads the under-15 golfers.
The best of the Otago golfers was Jonny Mackay (Lower Waitaki), who finished with a one-under-par 71.
Inia Logan (Cromwell) opened with 72, Jacob Bellamy (St Clair) had 73 and Joseph Hancock (Otago) carded 75.
The best female golfer yesterday was the well-regarded Juliana Hung (Russley), who finished one under par on 71 to hold a four-shot lead with two rounds to play.
In the team events, Otago took a narrow two-shot lead over Canterbury with Tasman in third place in the under-19 section.
Otago was less fortunate in the under-16 section with a team tally of 23 shots behind the strong Canterbury quintet.
The weather was initially ideal and Otago under-16 golfers started well, but when a strong northwesterly blew mid-round their scores soared.
